There have been two in-depth consultations with all UK medical schools to identify and evaluate the current methods of calculating quartiles, and the range of assessments – type and number - used by the different medical schools.
A pilot looking at a proposed method of calculating the Educational Performance Measure was carried out in August 2010 and the exercise demonstrated the complexity of the proposed framework. In order to address the issues, an EPM Task and Finish Group was set up.
The EPM framework was agreed by students, employers and all medical schools in 2011 following consultation, piloting and the advice of the Task and Finish Group. The EPM comprises:
- Medical school performance (calculated in deciles), worth between 34-43 points
- Additional degrees, worth between 0-5 points
- Other educational achievements, worth between 0-2 points
The EPM Deciles part of the framework was piloted as part of the Parallel Recruitment Exercise during the 2011/2012 academic year, with all schools consulting with their students around the construct of deciles. Please refer to the final report of the Parallel Recruitment Exercise for more information around the PRE EPM.
