FAQs

We will be liaising with medical students throughout the project and are keen to hear your views on the proposed system. This is why we have set up both a Facebook group and a discussion forum. Any comments made on either of these forums will be fed back to the Project Group and considered when making the final decisions so please use these tools and let us know what you think.

Parallel Recruitment Exercise
As you know, the recruitment and selection process for the Foundation Programme is changing. The aim is for that change to take place for the FP 2013 intake. Before we can introduce new selection processes, we must undertake a full-scale parallel recruitment run to ensure the new process is robust. This means that final year medical students will be asked to participate in a Situational Judgement Test (SJT) pilot in addition to completing the online FPAS application form for recruitment to the Foundation Programme in 2012.

The SJT will consist of 30 multiple-choice questions and is proposed to replace the current 'white-space questions'. The test will take one hour to complete and is designed to see how you will react in the workplace given different scenarios you are likely to encounter as a foundation doctor.

This information has been sent to students who will be applying to the Foundation Programme for 2012. To full email is available to download:

Video Podcast
A video podcast between Professor Paul O'Neill, Chair of the project, and Nick Deakin, medical student at Bristol Medical School, is available and can be watched on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PuenDI1GvE. This provides information on the proposed systems and will answer many of the questions you may have.

2011 Handbook
A guide to the Improving Selection to the Foundation Programme project has been developed for medical students. This outlines why the project is being carried out, information on the proposed system and pilots, the benefits of the new system, and how students can get involved and feedback their comments.

The 2011 Handbook is now available to download:

Key facts for students
A one page summary of the project has been produced to give you the key facts for the project and to help reduce any concerns you may have on the implementation date of any new system.
